106 years ago, on March 24, 1905, the great writer and passionate traveler, the founder of the genre of science fiction, Jules Verne, died. The writer lived in the past and the future, on earth and underground, in the air, under water and on distant planets. Much of what he described in his novels will have a lasting place in the world in the future.
Jules Verne’s technical predictions include the invention of an airplane and helicopter, television and video communications, interplanetary travel (and the launch site chosen by the writer for the flight to the moon is located near the modern spaceport), space satellites and underwater spacesuits. But the submarine described in the novel “20 thousand leagues under the sea”, the invention of Jules Verne is difficult to call: the idea of creating a submarine was considered by Leonardo da Vinci, they tried to build it under Peter I and use it in the United States during the civil war. The fires of the Inquisition are kindled in the cities. But now they are not burned for heretics and Gentiles, witches and wizards. And for the Christian knights, the Templars who guarded the pilgrims in the middle East. 7 centuries ago, on may 12, 1311, the Inquisition publicly executed 54 prominent members of the Templar Order. Soon there will be nothing left of the order. The assassins of the knights will appropriate their wealth, but it will not bring them happiness. All of them will suffer the curse of the Templars-the words of the last master of the order, Jacques de Molay, uttered by him right at the stake.
It all started out romantic. After the capture of Jerusalem in 1099, the participants of the First crusade returned to the West, so the new States of the crusaders and pilgrims coming to the Holy land had no one to protect them. Continue reading
On a typical October evening, I was rushing to the store to restock my groceries. Hesitating at the newly opened tea and coffee Department, I caught the thought: “I’ll Come in!”A friendly girl, the owner of the coffee Paradise, immediately drew attention to me. I asked a lot of questions. While the girl was patiently describing the next type of coffee, with large, as if toy grains, a bitter aroma of rosemary and dry cream, a pretty woman entered the glass doors. At the word “Robusta,” she raised her eyebrows and, speaking specifically to me, began to take a lively interest in the presence of Arabica and that ” strange kind of coffee you mentioned.” What can I say, in the coffee business, I’m still a practitioner, I still have to learn the theory. Although the house has a large encyclopedia with a soft matte cover and juicy pictures of coffee… And the woman apparently decided that during my stay in the Department, I have already studied everything that is possible, and is ready to advise the best. Our globe seems to have no more white spots – everything is open. However, there are still mysterious places covered with legends. It is there that events occur that are not easily explained from a rational and practical point of view. The classic example is, of course, The Bermuda triangle.
How many ships and planes flying over it were lost there… If they were found, they were suspiciously undamaged, with no sign of people on Board. Yes, pragmatists say that in the area of the Bermuda triangle disasters occur no less than in other areas – just PR is PR. But supporters of its ambiguity put forward much more interesting versions: UFOs that kidnap people (of course, for experiments!), the inhabitants of Atlantis (apparently trying to refute that they are a figment of Plato’s imagination), travel in time and space (and who does not dream of teleportation?). Did anything surprising happen to you? Our electricity was leaping (my computer didn’t turn on at all). On this day, so many things accumulated that everything had to be done literally on the run, but I somehow managed to make it to the beginning of the holiday! Anya (Krokodila) and I exchanged Souvenirs, and what would you think? One of the presented cups I accidentally broke into pieces (the benefit of all the regulars exclaimed “for luck!”), and her candy bouquet was accidentally eaten… in General, the day was unforgettable. And continuing the theme of incredible coincidences, we begin the week of things with an interesting story or an unsolved mystery. These are the artifacts that our authors keep…
Olga Kovaleva (olena2): “I have three soulful things. Two of them are old grandmother’s figurines.I love and protect them very much. They have an amazing ability to calm. If I feel very bad and anxious, I just take them in both hands, and it’s like my whole life flashes before my eyes. Continue reading
