Mountain of the Dead demands new victims: remembering the tragedy at the Dyatlov pass
The first of February will mark 57 years since a terrible tragedy took place high in the mountains of the Northern Urals on one of the passes – members of the Dyatlov tour group died under mysterious circumstances. After many years, the pass, named after the leader of the group, continues to take the lives of climbers, recently received a message about another victim of the Mountain of the Dead…
Dozens of documentaries and feature films have been made about the Dyatlov pass, novels and novellas have been written, and volumes of official documentation on operational search work have been collected. The tragedy that took place on the night of February 1 to 2, 1959, did not leave anyone indifferent.
There were 10 participants of the famous tour group, only one managed to survive – Yuri Yudin – and then only because he left the race at the most important stage of the ascent. The other 9 daredevils persevered to the top. Their names will forever remain in our memory: Igor Dyatlov, Rustem Slobodin, Yuri Doroshenko, Grigory krivonishchenko, Nikolai Thibault-brignol, Lyudmila Dubinina, Semyon Zolotarev and Alexander Kolevatov.
There are a lot of stories about how tourists freeze during ascents, but not all of them get such resonance as the story of the Dyatlov group. The reason for this is the inability to establish the true reason why 9 strong and brave young men died. According to information from personal diaries of participants of a campaign it was succeeded to establish that on February 1 woodpeckers made a number of mistakes which, probably, became fatal. The group arrived on the route late enough and also deviated from the planned path. In order not to lose the height gained, woodpeckers decided to set up a tent on the slope of mount 1079.
It was this tent that rescuers found when they started searching for the missing group. The tent was cut from the inside, and 9 fully equipped backpacks of the band members were preserved in it. The bodies of the dead children could not be found immediately. We searched for them for several months, the last ones were found only in the spring, when the snow began to fall. Each new “discovery” brought the rescuers in shock.
All the band members died of hypothermia, but some of them had no clothes on except their underwear, while others were naked. Almost all of them had multiple burns on their hands and feet, and three people were seriously injured.
Among the causes of the tragedy are called both very real and fantastic factors. Although doubts are caused by both. The most common versions include the descent of an avalanche or the collapse of a tent due to a snow blockage. Frantic with fear, the tourists got out of what they had been sleeping in, with only one thought – to run into the forest, where there would not be such a piercing icy wind.
Theories were put forward about the murder of tourists by escaped prisoners, residents of the Mansi tribes who revered the mountain as a Saint, and local poaching officers. But all of them were refuted, since no traces of other people were found.
Among the most fantastic options – death from an unknown weapon, which was tested in this area, the machinations of the special services, or even a meeting with a UFO. The official conclusion adopted by the court stated that the death of tourists was due to a natural force that people were not able to overcome.
