Mystery and fantasy in an unusual paintings by Alexandra Modeller

The gallery of strange creatures, embodied fears and sinful desires in the paintings of Alexandra Bodeller will easily take you to the farthest borders of fantasy. Each canvas is a window to the Other, where everything is decided only by imagination. Beautiful, strange and unusual paintings by the Saint Petersburg artist open the door to the alluring world of the supernatural.

Demons and monsters, unearthly landscapes – all fantastic, but elusively familiar. Most artists avoid anything related to modern mass culture. Alexandra does not follow prejudices, and very organically takes the best out of her. In the anatomy of demons, you can recognize the hyped “chitinous” style, and the elements of clothing are made in the tradition of modern fantasy (with a light feed of J. R. R. Tolkien).R. R. Tolkien’s fairy-tale Worlds have become a separate theme of creativity – look at the drawings in the style of fantasy from Nell Fallcard and read a little about dragons in modern art). In the use of “ordinary” forms for unusual paintings, the independent character and principled nature of the artist is clearly shown. Alexandra does not deny modernity, she creates according to its laws: the image recognized by the masses is intended only to convey meaning. The subjects of many works are permeated by a completely non-formulaic idea of loneliness, which oppresses any being in any World.
A large place in the work is given to personal experiences: for many years, using male pseudonyms in the professional environment, the artist now defends the idea of perfection and self-sufficiency of the female principle (which is somewhat over the top in the idea of gender equality… but these are her views).

The mixing of different cultures, from which the artist selects the necessary images, creates an intriguing collective image of the convey meaningy. In addition to Christian ideas about the underworld, elements of the mythology of Ancient Egypt and sometimes Central America are used.
